The Lure of Vieques Island (Part One)

We have been asked many of times through the years why is Vieques such a special place and why do we keep going back. For us that is a big answer to give because there is so much we love about the Island.

As a kid I grew up watching Gilligan's Island and always wanted to be stranded with them on the island. To me that was the cat's meow, living in peace and quite on an island where no one can find me. I was also the kid that had an escape plan to sneak away from my elementary school in the fourth grade. I just wanted to run and see the world but I never dared to leave school knowing I would be found. Not to mention my parents would tan my hide for sure. That feeling never left me all of the way through high school. I just wanted to be gone! I grew up going to California every summer to see family, which in turn meant I went to the beach every year. I loved water and enjoyed the lake we would go to near my home growing up in the Mid West. I even worked as a lifeguard for years in my hometown. So to say the least I was a water nut combined with the urge to run and destined to be on an Island somewhere!

Fast forward twenty years to 2008 I found myself planning a trip to Vieques Island hoping we would just get to the Island in one piece. I was finally going to make it to that island in the sea I always dreamed of and Li Li was getting to see somewhere new. Li Li did very little traveling before we met eight years ago and has always been excited to open her horizons. It did not matter how much planning I had done we were not ready for one very important item. That one item was falling head over heals in love with Vieques. The flight to the Island Puddle Jumpers for Virgins the view from our room, the first drive out to Punta Arenas aka Green Beach and the first view from Punta Arenas to the Caribbean Sea. Spirit moving, mind melting slack jaw in love is what I was and Li Li was in the same boat. Wow was the word of the week and the smiles were never ending on our faces. We both knew from our first time on the Island of Vieques this was the place for us to live.

Go see the Island and find out what magic Vieques has in store for you. The worst thing that we have found that can happen on your trip to Vieques is falling in love with nature and trying to find a way to stay. As my father would say "that is a high class problem to have" and don't we know it! We hope you find your way to paradise and stumble upon that inner peace you have been looking for all of your life.

Traveling to Vieques is much easier now compared to 2008 all reservations were done with phone calls. Today traveling to Vieques is a piece of cake and stress free. Cross your fingers and hope for good luck is what we relied on for our first jaunt to the Island of Paradise. Flying into the Vieques for the first time is a thrill in it's self and a wonder of beautiful water to view on the way over. Just look around on the blog and you will find the story of our first flight to the Island.
