Vieques or Culebra? There is no Comparison!

Ah, the age old question of which Island should we go to for vacation Vieques or Culebra. This is the easiest question we get about our travels to Puerto Rico. If you have no desire to visit 20 different beaches with very few people but prefer two beaches with tons of people go to Culebra. Quick facts on Culebra that you won't find online. It is a scrub island (very few palm trees) with one road that doesn't loop the Island. You simply pay $70 a day for a Jeep to drive just a few miles a day. In one week we drove seventy miles at a rate of $10 per mile. What! $10 a mile you say! To go along with the insane Jeep rental there are only two  beaches you can drive to and they are rough surf beaches with plenty of wind to sand blast every body part. The other beaches are long treks that make taking a cooler full of beer a real challenge and something we didn't do. This not a place for those that have problems walking long distances up and down steep hills.

Trust us we were wondering why did we leave our wonderful Island of Vieques! We are not big on eating out so we cook most of our meals at the rentals we stay in. This was a tough challenge because the lack of food stores and you had to go to a separate place to buy meat. Yes you can't buy meat at the main grocery store! Insanity I say! Within one hour in Culebra we were ready to fly back to Vieques and we haven't even made it to our rental... Holy Mother of God does anyone know how to clean a house? Our little blue casa on the hillside was a scummy bug infested roach trap that we had to clean from top to bottom. Nothing like cleaning house on your vacation for relaxation. Two good things about the Island the people are nice and there is a good place to eat pizza.

If you have no imagination with no will to go to twenty different beaches with palm trees and don't enjoy exploring the whole island enjoy your time on Culebra. You can always find us on Punta Arenas where the grass is greener and palm trees are plentiful on the Beautiful Island of Vieques.
